Welcome to the Glaze Development Workshop
Glaze is a vast and fascinating area within ceramics — it can bring great satisfaction and a sense of achievement, but it can also be a source of frustration.

In this workshop, you’ll get an introduction to what glazes are and how you can create your own glazes, giving you the confidence to start your own glaze testing journey.

We’ll break things down to help you understand the different components that make up a glaze, and how you can use them to achieve the results you’re looking for. The main focus will be on developing functional glazes and exploring how to create visually interesting surfaces. You’ll also get practical tools and methods so you can continue experimenting in a systematic — yet accessible — way.

During this workshop, you’ll learn:

  • What a glaze is and how to make your own

  • Which oxides produce which colors, and how to combine them

  • How to mix your own glazes in practice

  • Various application techniques

  • How to create different glaze effects

What’s included:

  • All raw materials

  • All necessary tools (except a respirator mask)

  • Templates for documenting your tests methodically

  • Tea, coffee and snacks

On the first day, we’ll begin with the theory part of the workshop, focusing on raw materials and how to build your own functional glaze. By the end of the day, you’ll be well prepared for the hands-on work on day two.

On the second day, I’ll provide you with three different base glaze recipes: one glossy, one semi-matte, and one matte transparent glaze. These recipes are yours to keep and continue experimenting with later. For the workshop, you’ll choose one of these as your starting point for testing. Together, we’ll methodically mix test batches and apply them to test tiles that I’ll have prepared in advance. These will then be fired in the kiln.

On the third and final day, we’ll meet to review and analyze the results of our tests!
